THINGS TO AVOID:
Walking your new puppy in high-dog traffic areas
Feeding him/her until you get home (unless absolutely necessary)
DRIVING WITH YOUR PUPPY
Most puppies take riding in the car very well and settle down quickly and fall asleep. We prefer to travel with ours in a passenger’s lap for the first few rides as this is generally where they are most at ease. If you are driving home alone a comfy crate or car seat is generally the safest option; however, they might whine a bit before they settle in. Covering the crate or giving your puppy a toy or chew for the trip may help. Upset tummies happen on occasion, so be prepared just in case there are accidents along the way. If you do have a lot of stops during your trip be sure to carry your puppy from the vehicle to the grass for safety. All of the new sights, smells and sounds may be overwhelming and it’s all too easy for them to slip collars/harnesses and get hurt or lost.
FLYING WITH YOUR PUPPY
Same as driving, most puppies settle into flying pretty easily. Overall it’s essentially the same advice, however, we do highly encourage you to bring a variety of toys (preferably without noise makers) and chews to keep them quiet and occupied, especially if you have a long flight. You will also need to purchase a soft sided crate. We are happy to take measurements of your individual puppy to help you find the appropriate size. Puppy pads in the travel crate are most convenient for accidents as they can be easily swapped out and kept clean. In a pinch you can also place one on the floor of a public restroom for potty breaks. NEVER use the designated pet areas in the airport with a puppy that hasn’t been fully vaccinated.
Puppy Proofing
Think toddler! Get down low and make sure no electrical, cable, or phone cords are out. Start practicing not leaving your shoes and clothes lying on the floor or leaving dishes or the remote control on a low coffee table. If you have kids, make sure they are getting in the habit of picking up their stuffed animals and small toys, which are all potential chew toys and/or choking hazards. Raise potentially toxic houseplants to a table or stand out of reach. Make sure all household cleaners and hazardous materials are inaccessible. Add baby or dog gates to the stairwell and any off-limit areas. The puppy should be kept in a controlled, observable area when not sleeping in their crate until they earn more space. This is the time to discuss with your spouse/kids/roommates, etc., where the puppy will sleep, eat, and be allowed to play and where it will be taken for potty. We recommend that the puppy sleep in a crate in an adult’s bedroom so that you can hear when they need to go out. Kids are often too sound of sleepers to hear them during the night. You may need to move the crate at bedtime or consider two crates, one for the bedroom and one for the main living area or kitchen, so they can take naps near you. If you have a two-story home, have one downstairs and one upstairs.
